Snow Day
Sunday, 22 February 2026
There was a snowstorm late in January, 10 inches of snow on 25 January followed by bitterly cold weather so it stayed. And stayed. Eventually there was some warmer weather in mid February. Still lots of white but also spreading places where the land began to be revealed. On the sunny side of the street, to be sure. But then forecasts for the return of more snow. Confused forecasts suggesting blizzard conditions and variable amounts of snow. Greater along the coast, less further north. In the end, here in northwestern New Jersey we had 7 inches. Family in Duxbury Massachusetts had 2 feet, more than 3 times as much.
Here's my snow day report.
Some rain in the morning changing over to snow right around 2:00 p.m.
Deer showed up in late afternoon, browsing on shrubbery
before the snow became heavier. Image taken at 5:10 p.m.
I had brought the bird feeders indoors yesterday evening. This morning
I scattered some sunflower seed and put more in the flying saucer feeder.
There are a couple of little critters that live under the kitchen steps.
At 10:58 p.m. I was amused to see where a trench had been
forged through the snow to reach the flying saucer feeder.
There is a snow gauge on the picnic table on the back deck.
By 1:17 a.m. on 23 February it has measured approximately
6 inches. And the snow is still enthusiastically coming down.
1:42 a.m. on 23 February
